Official Name: The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017 — An Act of Parliament that established IIITs across India in PPP mode and granted them the status of Institutes of National Importance.
Overview of the Act
The IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017 was enacted by the Parliament of India to establish a network of Indian Institutes of Information Technology through a Public-Private Partnership model. These institutes are set up jointly by the Central Government, concerned State Governments, and industry partners on a not-for-profit basis.
Under this Act, the institutes are granted the status of Institutes of National Importance — placing them on par with the IITs and NITs — and are empowered to confer degrees, diplomas, and other academic distinctions.
